At the September 19 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board, the Board recognized Vera M. Cochran, an 8th grade student at Umoja International Academy, as a Stellar Student. Vera is known for her academic excellence and community involvement. She consistently demonstrates a passion for learning, willingness to help others, and actively participates on her school’s student leadership team, where she helps organize events and initiatives to improve student life. Vera’s balanced approach to academics, leadership, and community service make her a role model for her fellow students.

The Board took action to approve the following resolutions:

  • A resolution recognizing September as National Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month. This Board Resolution was developed and presented to the Board in partnership with the District’s Student Mental Health Wellness group. In support of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Week, World Suicide Prevention Day and National Recovery Month, all held in September, »ÆÉ«ÊÓƵ is encouraging a special focus on the intersection between suicide prevention, alcohol and drug use and efforts that foster resilience, recovery and well-being for our students, families, staff and community.

  • A resolution to recognize September 15 through October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. »ÆÉ«ÊÓƵ recognizes and honors the contributions of local Hispanic leaders, District staff, students, and their families, and commends the many local community organizations that support and celebrate the multiethnic and multicultural customs of Latino, Latinx, and Hispanic communities.

The Board held determination hearings and took action to approve resolutions to conditionally approve charter renewal petitions for St. HOPE Public School 7 and Sacramento Charter High School for a five-year term, beginning July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030. The Board directed »ÆÉ«ÊÓƵ District staff to develop memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreements between the District and the schools that detail corrective actions that the schools have committed to make and a process for District monitoring of the progress.

The Board held a Public Hearing and took action to approve a Resolution certifying that funds earmarked for instructional materials are expended in compliance with California’s Pupil Textbook and Instructional Materials Incentive Act. The resolution certifies that each Sacramento City Unified School District student has sufficient textbooks and/or instructional materials in all core subjects that are aligned to academic content standards and the cycles and content of curriculum frameworks. The resolution also certifies the availability of science lab equipment for students in grades 9-12.

The Board received an update on the District’s 2024-25 budget and took action to approve the District’s 2023-2024 Year End Unaudited Actuals Financial Report. At the close of each fiscal year, school districts must complete a financial report to be filed with the county superintendent, provided to the auditors as the basis of their annual financial audit, and subsequently filed with the state. The 2023-24 Year End Financial Report includes a summary by fund of revenues and expenditures for the period beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024, and incorporates changes based on the 2024-25 state budget that was finalized in June.
